The COMENIUS 2 programme is one of the initiatives run by the SOCRATES agency. (The SOCRATES Agency manages cooperative European initiatives in the area of education together with the Ministry of Education and the European Commission.) The aim of the programme is to enable future language instructors to broaden their knowledge of other European languages, other European countries and other educational systems, as well as gain teaching experience while at the same time enhancing their students' language skills by increasing their motivation to learn languages and stimulating their interest in the culture and country of the assistant.
In order to participate, you must hold a degree that may lead to the teaching of a foreign language or be enrolled in studies preparing for such a degree and evidence a firm intention to engage in such a profession.
You must also not have been previously employed as a foreign language instructor.
The assistants teach either the language of the host country or their native language. The assistant is placed both to pursue training as a future instructor and promote his or her native language as well as to carry out a teaching mission with students to raise their interest in the countries and cultures concerned and, if possible, to contribute to setting up a European project for the institution.
Their role also involves providing support to students who are handicapped, underprivileged or experiencing learning difficulties with foreign languages, helping with the creation of teaching materials, participating in reinforcing the European dimension of the host establishment and assisting in the implementation of a COMENIUS project between the host establishment and their home school. The assistant may be entitled to a fellowship covering the costs of round-trip travel and certain living costs (basic housing, food and local commuting expenses).
The amount thus varies depending on the destination.
